In 2023, I studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark. While there, I completed a photo series, shown below, for my class “Ways of Seeing: Storytelling Through Photography.” It was designed for a printed book and therefore shown side-by-side.
I moved to Copenhagen for four months without knowing anyone. For the duration of the Fall 2023 semester, I grappled with the feeling of being completely lost in a new place while completely free. I find myself in this in-between space a lot lately, constantly moving through college, my hometown, and other third spaces. I created this project with the hopes of finding some solace within myself during one of the more difficult transition phases I have endured. For my photos, I played with self-portrait for the first time - something far outside my comfort zone, in an attempt to challenge the discomfort I aimed to capture. I really tried to lead with emotion in my photos, another element unfamiliar to me, and it resulted in the usage of several new techniques and photos with subjects I wouldn’t normally gravitate towards. This exploration led me to embrace discomfort, venture into unexplored techniques, and capture subjects that reside beyond my habitual lens. Rather than masking this transitional phase with a veil of optimism, this project serves as a testament to acknowledging and accepting the intricacies of this liminal space.
